Calcite in Mercenaria fossil clam shell
Ruck’s Pit, Okeechobee Co., Florida, USA
9.8 x 7.4 x 4.9 cm.
A unique and beautiful mineral/fossil specimen from Florida. It features a large fossil clam shell of the genus Mercenaria that has been partially replaced by numerous crystals of gorgeous, gemmy, light golden Calcite. Unlike most of this material that I’ve seen, which consists of messy-looking shell fragments with a bit of usually damaged Calcite attached, this specimen preserves a virtually complete clam shell and displays many well-placed and sharply terminated Calcite crystals. A very unusual and quite showy specimen, with excellent composition and perfect presentation for display. The Calcite FLUORESCES and PHOSPHORESCES under both shortwave and longwave UV light.
